The Imperial Atlantian Nobility differs significantly
from the peerages and systems of titled nobility maintained by
feudally-derived monarchist states.
Only Atlantian Citizens may be Invested as Nobles, and the privilege is
reserved
for the Empire's senior notables
and eminent persons. Atlantian Titles of Nobility are awarded at the
sole discretion of the Emperor, who is fons honorum. Titles
are held for life (ad vitam), and they are neither hereditary
nor associated with any territorial fief system. Individuals may hold
only one Title of Nobility at a time and as awards are made on the
basis of individual merit the spouses
and offspring of Nobles are not entitled to the use of honorifics
through association.
The primary role of the
Atlantian Nobility is to provide the Empire with a meritocracy from amongst which the Imperial Succession can be determined.
Should the Emperor die or cease to effectively reign the Empire's Nobles are
ordained by the Constitution to meet in conclave as the Imperial
Electoral Convocation to elect from amongst their ranks a new Emperor.
Whilst this election must also be ratified by a
minimum three quarters majority of the
Imperial Senate the Constitution anticipates a high
representation of Nobles within the Imperial Senate, lending further
stability to the Succession process.
It is
important to note that Atlantian Noble Titles cannot be purchased.
